Whenever Francis had the opportunity, he went begging on the principal feasts of the year; as he remarked, the words of the Psalmist, "Man should eat the food of angels" (Psalm 77:25) are fulfilled in God's poor, because the bread of angels is that which has been begged for the love of God and given at the inspiration of the angels, and gathered from door to door by holy poverty.
